While Adam Sandler's comedies have almost
always raised storms of laughter back in the United
States, such is not always true with Taiwan's audiences,
who often don't seem to quite understand his humor.
Despite the box office successes of "The Wedding
Singer", "The Water Boy" and "Big
Daddy", local audiences were forced to venture
to their local video rental store--rather than theaters--to
enjoy other Sandler films, including "Anger Management",
"Punch-Drunk Love" and "The 50 First
Dates".
Thankfully, Sandler's latest production, "Click",
featuring romance and the family, will be making its
way to Taiwan's big screens. One of the summer's hits
in America, "Click" invites Taiwanese audiences
back to theaters to see what level of laughter he is
capable of delivering.
The movie tells the fascinating story of Michael Newman
(Sandler), a workaholic architect who ignores his wife
and children. By chance, he gets hold of a very special
remote control from a secret salesman, played by Christopher
Walken. This mighty device controls not only TV and
lights but also people and things around him. Naturally,
dramatic changes result, as his life begins to spiral
out of control.
The remote not only controls the volume
of real life, but also allows main character to pause
what's currently happening and return to times that
he prefers. In addition, the language, complexion of
the characters in this "program" and the size
of the screen can all be altered to his liking--poking
fun at current DVD multi-medium formats.
The film's success lies in a magical
combination that is funny, self-reflecting and heart-warming.
Michael thinks that he can have it all with the remote
control but also begins to find that he has missed out
on precious life moments with his loved ones--growing
up with his children, sharing life with his wife, and
spending time with his father. As he fast-forwards his
life, he realizes importance of family and love.
"Click" maintains Sandler's
tradition of celebrity cameos throughout his movies,
from Kate Beckinsale to David Hasselhoff, of "Knight
Rider" fame, who plays an evil boss that flirts
with Jennifer Coolidge from "American Pie".
As usual, fans will also want to keep an eye out for
Sandler's good friends, Rob Schneider and Henry Winkler,
making their usual appearances.
