| The Devil Wears
Prada offers career survival tips

Thanks to this movie's name, it's not
hard to determine what it's all about. "The Devil
Wears Prada" is based on the popular book written
by Lauren Weisberger, who drew on her experience working
at Vogue as editor and the executive editor's assistant.
Set inside the fashion media industry, the film tells
the story of how a naive young woman working for a bossy
editor still manages to find her own direction.
As we quickly find out, Runway is a
top New York fashion magazine that attracts plenty of
young female employees. Andy (Anne Hathaway) scores
a job as assistant for one of the top editors, Miranda
Priestly (Meryl Streep) who--not surprisingly--wears
Prada and treats her underlings like dirt.
For Andy, it becomes a constant struggle
for survival in this field. In the beginning, she is
bullied by a more experienced assistant, before completely
transforming herself to her editor's liking with glamorous
outfits and accessories. Finally making it to the top,
at the expense of losing her friends and herself, leads
to Andy's introspection about the meaning of it all.
The movie presents two different perspectives
on life from Andy and Miranda. There is no definite
right or wrong shown here. Andy is eager to please Miranda,
who happens to be ruthless and cynical, while Miranda
seems to have everything at her expense but, yet, is
lonely and unhappy.
Anne Hathaway first gained notice while
playing silly-girl roles and it's obvious that she's
worked hard to improve her acting in this film. However,
her real-life and film roles appear to overlap as she
tries to get on veteran actress Meryl Streep's good
side. Nevertheless, Streep appears to be happy to give
her a pointer or two on acting.
Whether you're male or female, this
is a story that you can relate to, thanks to the interpretation
of this plot and connections that both Hathaway and
Streep make to their audience.
