G-Down:
A Sublime Experience
By
Ken Lin
Translated by Annie Tai
Following directions given by an Internet friend, I
arrived at G-Down. I looked in through the French windows
and saw a small room with a huge table, a few chairs,
dim lighting...and not a single person.
After
confirming the location with my Internet friend,
I entered and went down the stairs. An ethereal
site unfolded before my eyes. I couldn't help
but exclaim, "Wow!"
As
expected, my Internet friend was sitting behind
the bar--a cozy space that looked like a private
living-room that might have been designed by an
architect. I complimented her on her choice of
venue. The boss joined our conversation, and any
awkwardness soon vanished.

The
boss, who has lived in Paris, brought in much of the
furniture and many of the decorations from Bali, providing
a rich Asian flavor. When we moved to one of the circles,
we found wooden chairs covered with soft, white, comfortable
cushions. Men and women were drowned in the graceful
music, exquisite wine was served, and misty light contributed
to a great atmosphere. Young and old alike seemed to
savor this time of leisure.
I
absorbed my surroundings and quickly felt assuaged.
My friend was right--this place could stay in a person's
memory forever. I still remember every little item there.
The only thing I forgot was my friend's name.
