DJ SL-"Good music is music that makes people feel good and is intelligent" By Ken Lin Translated by Kevin Lax

     I first learned of DJ SL from Liu Xuan's books. After reading about his unconventional ways and his risk-embracing character, I was not surprised to learn that this Julliard-trained, Harvard psychology MA is now a famous DJ and prominent feature of Taipei's most fashionable bars.

     He started early. At 19 he was already a DJ in New York. He learned the essence of Hip-hop from a black flatmate.Now, his Deep House is very popular in Taiwan "This is a sound that stays in your head after running about the city all day,when all is quiet." He adds, "Deep House makes people feel, it is sexy, soft, and has an intellectual feel".

SL is adept at drawing soulful music from black vinyl. "Good music is intelligent music" he says."Music should be based on feelings, and only through intelligent and reasonable composition by the composer can the listener be given a strong feeling and be moved." If feeling and rationality are combined, then no matter what the music is, it is good music, he says.

    He recommends the Masters At Work. Using real players and instruments, they merge deep soul and a romantic style, taking us back to the great Earth, Wind & Fire era. Their simple rhythm combines Funk, House, Afro-jazz and Soul.
