Not just another brick in The Wall

Sing a medley with me now - "...I met my love by the factory walls (Irish Folk), when the walls come tumbling down (Thorogood), I will be your wonder wall (Oasis), just nod if you can hear me...I am the walrus (Floyd, Beatles)." Ok, not that last one, but you get the idea; there are " walls " thsoughout music, figurative and physical, especially in hard rock. Except for musicians like Wu Bai and China Blue, that hard musical attitude expressed by a wall has largely been absent from the Taipei nightlife. But now the Taipei music scene is starting to roll towards a stone, or wall, of its own. The venue is called-- no surprise, if you've read this far--The Wall. It's Taipei's hottest live house for home -grown rock and roll.

It's also a been a staging ground for some of the starry-eyed rockers participating in both this month's Ho Hai Han Battle of the Bands and the internationally re-known Formoz Festival (www.formoz.com). That makes it a safe bet to find some quality rock or, as may be with the case given the many student bands, avant-garde ensembles, DJ's and performance rocker/artists that appear there, quality entertainment (Ref. Frazier, POTS English Edition, "Cat Power" 6/04). If you're lucky, you'll catch a night when somebody like Schlumpy is there to release an album.

Tickets are sold at the door for NT$250 to NT$700 depending on who is playing, but you can save a 100 kuai or so by purchasing in advance online at http://www.the-wall.com.tw. Go there now to check out their story and schedule for July, because I'm going to skip the bio and the schedule is up front in the "What's On" section of TaiwanFun. But please do come back and finish this article when you're done surfing.

One last thing, the acoustics are great and the bands are loud. A few tables dot the mosh pit, and there is a great drinking wall behind and above the pit about 10 meters from the stage and three meters from the Jack Daniels. If you like your music live, loud and loaded, then The Wall is the place to be.
