One
of the reasons I like Taipei is the diversity
of its nightlife. If you are an electronic music
lover, then rest assured that some of the finest
easy-listening music, hip hop and techno DJs in
Asia will chase your sleeping desires away all
night long.
If you like to start in a bar with some easy-listening
music, then you cannot miss one of those two well-known
establishments, Carnegies (100, AnHe Rd., sec.
2; 02-2325-4433) and Brass Monkey (166, FuXing
N. Rd.; 02-2547-5050). Both places have DJs that
frequently jump genres, playing mini-sets of everything
from ?s R&B to hip hop, taking everybody onto
the dance floor, especially on Ladies' Night--on
Wednesday at Carnegies and Thursday at Brass Monkey.
After a few drinks, you may feel like going a
bit crazier in the same musical genre. Then it
is time to head into one of those clubs that stay
open until morning, like Roxy Vibe (155, JinShan
S. Rd., sec. 2, B1; 02-2358-2813) and TU (249,
FuXing S. Rd., sec.1, B1; 02-2704-7290).
If you are a bit trendier and you wear your fancy
hip hop clothing, then you should go into one
of Taipei's mega-lounge bars: Plush (Core Pacific
Mall 12F, 138, BaDe Rd., sec. 4; 02-3762-1600)
which has a panoramic view of Taipei, and the
ever-popular Patio (22, SongShou Rd., B1; 02-8780-8868).
Both places feature pop and hip hop DJs and attract
big crowds. But, if your musical preferences tend
toward more non-commercial hip hop, then go to
B1 (71, AiGuo E. Rd., B1; 02-2397-0506), where
DJ Nicky will satisfy your demands.
If you like both hip hop and house music and are
undecided, then Room 18's (18, SungShou Rd., B1;
02-2345-2778) Wednesday-night DJs play hip hop,
and spin funky and disco house for beautiful people
on other days.
Those who want to listen to both music genres
in the same place can try one of Taipei's mega-clubs,
Luxy (201, ZhongXiao E. Rd., sec. 4, 5F; 02-2772-1000)
and Ministry of Sound (310, LeQun 3rd Rd. in Dachih;
02-8502-1111), which have both hip hop and house
rooms and a heady party atmosphere all night long.
As a bonus, both Luxy and MoS frequently bring
in top international DJs to entertain you.
If you are a pure tech-house lover and want to
listen to the best of it, be sure to drop at one
of the two places where local DJs spin until mid-morning,
AXD (8, JiLong Rd., sec. 2, B1; 02-2762-9646)
and Purple (182, NanJing E. Rd., sec. 4; 02-2577-7959).
It's one more night that Taipei won't be sleeping.
