Chuan Men Tzu is exactly what
the name implies, a place to relax and chat with
friends and neighbors. Walk on in and sit right
down. You're welcomed in through a couple tables
on the outdoor deck next to the barbie. Inside
is cozy with a small bar and a table for larger
parties. While barbecue bars like this are ubiquitous
in Japan, Chuan Men Tzu's style is old China with
a eclectic touches--like the glowing plastic deer
out front. There are photos of all the regulars,
too. The best thing about Chuan Men Tzu is that
it's not like like anyplace else. It has a laid-back
style that welcomes you whether you're in a suit
or wearing shorts and flip flops.
Owner Tu Fei opened Chuan Men
Tzu two years ago, leaving behind her modeling
career and a lucrative ice cream business in ShiLin.
She started from scratch, developing the barbecue
recipes with help from her friends. Their Zi Ran
Lamb Kabob, a recipe from China's traditionally
muslim Xinjiang Province, is delicious. The bacon
wrapped shrimp are also a must-try. They have
the usual beef, chicken and veggies, but everything,
even the rice bun, becomes more special at Chuan
Men Tzu. Orders are by the kabob so you can try
a variety and share with friends. There is plenty
of beer to wash it down, as well as cocktails.
Beyond the ordinary choices there are Blue Girl
lager and sake.
Tu Fei's favorite thing about
Chuan Men Tzu is her customers. During the week,
it's an after-work crowd from the neighborhood
and on the weekends families come. The neighborhood
is between the TongHua Street Night Market and
AnHe Road 'meet market'. It's a perfect spot to
grab a bite, without the night market traffic.
Stop in before the club, after a movie or anytime,
just to have a chat with the neighbors.
Taiwan Fun Magazine is required by government
regulations to remind you not to drink and drive.
