NO. 5

By Shanzi Chen Translated by Sho Huang

5, Lane 21, AnHe Rd, Sec 1
停業 Closed

This establishment's name makes it easy to remember that it's located at Number 5, Lane 21, AnHe Road. If that doesn't work, a bright, flashy LED-display sign standing right next to the entrance also helps mark the spot.

No. 5's interior decor is based around the Chinese character, ? [which means "return"]. The bar is set up in the inner square and right at the center of the square a cross-shaped LED light hangs over the bar. Six private rooms are arranged around the outer square with different ethnic themes, such as Chinese, Arabian and Indian, to create an exotic atmosphere. Each room is draped with veils to provide privacy.
Manager Xiao-Kai says that although the bar has been around for less than a year, most of the customers here are regulars. The modern, intimate design helps explain why it's also popular among celebrities. Xiao-Kai himself has a dozen years of bartending experience, which enables him to come up with unique drinks that his guests enjoy.

The manager demonstrated his expertise by mixing a special cocktail drink, Firing No. 5, which requires two glasses, one holding three different kinds of hard liquor and the other filled with orange liqueur. The liqueur is ignited and immediately poured into the other glass. The flame sinks into the three-colored liquor like a waterfall before one drinks it, savoring a smooth, tasty flavor. If you're tempted, however, beware of the aftershock that 70-percent alcohol can bring.

Although the food menu here isn't long, over 20 specially-prepared dishes cover cuisine from three continents--Chinese, American and Italian. The Red Wine Filet is prepared with barbecued/fried steak cut into cubes and sprinkled with red wine sauce for a tender, fresh, tasty dish. Stir-fried dishes, such as the crispy Seven-Spice (Chinese herb) Tempura are popular with drinks. Pepper Salt Stinky Tofu (NT$250) is another item which quickly sells out.

No. 5's logo is a crown, symbolizing glamour and style. However, the affordable prices mean that everyone can enjoy the opportunity to be royalty here.
