When Chiayi residents want to eat good Cantonese food, they head over to the swanky Idee Department Store and take the elevator up to the 11th floor. That¡¦s where Chiayi meets Canton, inside the spacious Rebar Cantonese Restaurant. Both locals and expects agree that this is one of the best dining experience available in the city: The food is fabulous, the waitstaff friendly and helpful, the seating comfortable, and the menu full of wonderful choices.

Among the dishes that diners can choose from are: a huge variety of dim sum platters, spicy dumplings, garlic shrimp casserole, seafood casseroles, dainty Cantonese rice cakes, and blueberry mini-croissants. The waitstaff make sure that diners' teacups remain full all the time.

According to the assistant manager, a Taipei native who has made Chiayi his home for the past three years and says he loves the southern Taiwan lifestyle, the restaurant is great for family reunions, romantic evenings and tasty luncheons. Indeed, one endorsement stands out: Last year, President Chen Shui-bian himself dined here with a visiting African leader and his entourage. Photographs of this event are displayed in the lobby.

Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, Rebar¡¦s dim sum delicacies make a fine meal, and customers can eat well for around NT$300 per person. In addition, on sunny days the views over the surrounding Chiayi countryside is a perfect complement to the food.
