Stepping through the doors of Cafe Strada
on JhongJeng 2nd Rd, one could easily imagine entering a small
bistro in Prague, Rome or any other European cosmopolitan
center. Strada is unlike anyplace else you are likely to find.
Cool Jazz plays softly, novels by Hemingway, Dostoyevsky and
Miller fill the cafe's bookshelves, provocative paintings
and Freudian posters line the walls, while intoxicating aromas
of Italian spices and espresso fill the air. Strada offers
excellent coffee and traditional Italian and European dishes,
made with delicate care using only the most basic ingredients.
As the owner, Zhang Xiao Wei, explains, this ensures that
the natural flavours of the dishes are not overwhelmed or
tainted. The Risotto Vialone Nano Gamberi and the Spaghetti
with Tomato Sauce & Seafood (both NT$210) are two delicious
examples of this simplistic approach. Strada also takes its
coffee very seriously: "coffee is available everywhere,
but if you want a real Italian Espresso, come to Strada."
