Walking along People’s Square, it is entirely possible that you will see a group of foreigners happily munching on large subs around sidewalk tables. At first, you might think that you are asleep and dreaming you are in a foreign country. Once you realize you are awake and look more closely, you will find that this popular place is a new cafe called Tomato. Tomato specializes in submarine sandwiches, with six kinds available. Ms. Hsieh, the proprietress, recommends the bacon sub (NT$70 to NT$90). The bread is made using whole wheat and Japanese yeast and has a crunchy crust. To wash your sandwich down, there is a selection of hot and cold coffees and green and black teas. One of the most popular menu items, especially among foreigners, is the veggie cheeseburger. Another specialty is the freshly-squeezed fruit juice (NT$55 to NT$75), made using fruit that is currently in season. Miss Hsieh says that many of her customers come to Tomato after shopping at NOVA and other computer stores nearby. So, next time you plan to shop for computers, software or computer peripherals in this area, come to Tomato to re-energize.
