La Bodega

In existence since 2001, La Bodega has a well-earned place in Taichung’s dining and nightlife scene, providing the cozy surroundings, live sports, drinks and food offerings of a traditional Spanish tapas bar. However, November saw it undertake the biggest-ever expansion of its menu, thanks to a new partnership between long-time French owner Laurent “Lolo” Rubio and compatriot Philippe “Philou” Rouchet.
After Philippe closed his own long-running Chez Philou French restaurant back in February, the two old friends decided to team up to offer a mostly-new menu of Spanish and French regional cuisine, gleaned from Chef Philou’s extensive years of cooking experience. La Bodega’s previous mixed-seafood Paella de Mariscos (still the best-seller) has now been joined by a Paella Royal (NT$490), a mix of seafood, chorizo, chicken and rabbit, as well as Paella Vegetarian (NT$280) and Paella Chicken & Chorizo. The restaurant’s original selection of 15 different tapas appetizers (NT$100-420) can still be enjoyed.
Among new main courses is a dish introduced to Taichung by Chez Philou, Rabbit in Mustard Sauce (NT$590). Made with locally-farmed rabbits, it’s in such demand that Philou advises interested diners to call ahead and make sure it’s available. Also popular is a fresh Chef Philou invention, Burger Made in Spain (NT$350), consisting of a beef patty infused with Spanish spices, chorizo and dried Spanish serrano ham. Other new additions include two steaks–Beef Fillet (NT$590) and Sirloin Steak (NT$890), both served with black pepper sauce–and four desserts, including Chocolate Fondant, Magdalenas (Spanish cupcakes), Liege Waffle, and Apple Crumble, all served with vanilla ice cream.
These new dining options, together with a long list of beers (NT$100-250), wines (by glass or bottle), cocktails and other traditional Spanish beverages like Sangria, El Porron and Tinto de Verano summer wine, ensure that La Bodega will continue to draw old and new customers for years to come.
