Kico Gelato

From our archives, Compass Magazine, OCT. 2002

Italian-style ice cream, better known as gelato, appears to be one of the latest fads in Taiwan, as evidenced by this excellent little Chungteh Road outlet, opposite the Yumaoou supermarket. Owner George Luo studied gelato-making in Milan for three months and now brings an unprecedented 70-plus freshly-made flavors to Taichung, with about 40 available at any given time. These include familiar and exotic creations like Toblerone, Lemon Chocolate (one of seven chocolate varieties), Coffee Variegato, Macaroon, Ciao Bimbo, Peppermint, Wildberries, Green Tea, Cherry Variegato, Fig Variegato and Pineapple Coconut. George stresses the fact that his gelato is all-natural with much lower sugar and fat content than regular ice cream. He also makes sorbretto ice cream, which uses fresh fruit concentrate and has absolutely no fat, and is experimenting with healthy soya gelato. One of the best things it the price–NT$40, NT$60 and NT$80 for one, two and three scoops, respectively. Customers can take-out their ice cream in special, insulated bags. Kico is located on Chungteh Road, opposite the Yumaoou supermarket.–By Douglas Habecker
