At the bottom end of the Wu Chiuan parkway is Taichung’s newest addition to the pub scene. Entering through the classy front entrance, one walks into a bustling and active atmosphere populated by men and women in after-work party mode. The attractive brick interior and high ceilings provide a different look and feel from other pubs, as well as help dissipate cigarette smoke. Opened in late December, the Concession is themed after the Shanghai foreign concession zones of yore and aims to provide a classic Chinese/Western mix look and feel. On one end is the stage and dance floor, where local bands perform a mix of covers. At the other (quieter) end is a pool table, making the Concession a good place to dance and then retire to engage in conversation. Musically, the Concession plays everything from the Big Band era to the Bee Gees, from 50’s rock to Latin tunes. Bottled beers start at NT$160 and cocktails at NT$180.
