Hong Ge Chang Mei Hakka Restaurant

From our archives, Compass Magazine, Aug. 2002:

By Ni-Ang Chen Translated by Patricia Li

This warm and friendly restaurant has been serving Hakka cuisine for over four years. An antique drum cart decorates the corner of this otherwise simple place. This restaurant serves traditional dishes such as bamboo and pork ($120 NT). Bite after bite of succulent pork and tender bamboo leave customers asking, “Can I have another bowl of rice?” The unique aspect of this restaurant is besides the typical Hakka styled stir fried dish ($100 NT) and ginger mixed with pork intestines ($140 NT), it constantly offers new innovative dishes. Some of these include a Hakka styled turnip cake ($80 NT), spicy stinky tofu ($120 NT) and Hakka style garlic flavored sausage. The well-known dish “special Hakka stir-fry” is made with pork and dried squid without dried tofu, celery or other additives. Finally, the “soup of the day” includes papaya soup and many others (NT$80). In addition to all this, this restaurant offers complimentary appetizers such as chilled shredded papaya.
