HWC Roasters

There was some surprise this summer when the Taichung Tourism & Travel Bureau’s inaugural Taichung Pearl Milk Tea Festival competition–featuring 398 stores, 47 brands and 120,000 voters–was won by HWC Roasters, specializing in high-grade coffees. Its winning Bubble Caffe Latte (NT$85) is made with specialty coffee, fresh Changhua boutique dairy farm milk, Sun Moon Lake Ruby Black Tea syrup, and chewy “pearls”, uniquely steamed in only seven seconds in a coffee machine. This smooth, beautiful drink is available at all of HWC’s 10 Taichung branches, including a brand-new Zhonggang store. Here, besides coffee basics like lattes, cappuccino and Americano (NT$55, NT$75/large), there are iced/hot Drip Coffees (NT$80), several teas (NT$55), milk teas (NT$65-80) and a wide variety of coffee drip bags and beans–like the “Power Drum” variety (NT$1,000 half-pound), served on Taiwan’s “Air Force One”. HWC’s 100-plus specialty coffees (earning 80 points or higher) are selected by CEO Penny Lin, a connoisseur and licensed instructor who carefully trains her baristas and travels to HWC’s Panamanian plantation and other nations to source beans, expertly processed under the guidance of award-winning roaster Bill Chiang.
