Ohya South Pacific Restaurant: Taichung’s island getaway

From our archives, Compass Magazine, Aug. 2002:

This bright and elegant restaurant is located diagonally across from the Taichung sports arena and Wen Ying Hall. Accentuated by high ceilings, white marble floors and natural light flooding through the windows, this spacious restaurant allows you to dine comfortably, talk and relax. A row of slender green bamboo sways gently outside the windows. Customers may recline in a wicker chair or lounge on a sofa next to the window and leaf through books and magazines.

Stylistically similar to Parity Coffee 3 Royalty House cafe chain, Ohya allows customers to choose a seat and fill out the table menu. In addition to the classic black teas, green teas, milk teas, and coffees in the NT$70 to NT$100 range, you can also enjoy a pot of natural, healthy flower tea for NT$150. Job’s Pearldew drink, for NT$85, is a specialty made from imported Yi-Ren boiled with osthmanthus. Abundant in GABA amino acids, vitamins B1 and B2 and plant-derived proteins, its beauty enhancing properties may be more than a myth. Mo-mo cha-cha, a chilled summer treat, includes fresh fruits like pineapple and attap, and taro. There are also refreshing fruit ices and mildly tart ice mixes. Customers can enjoy drinks and dishes for only NT$80 during the 2-to-5 p.m.afternoon teatime.

Hong Kong and Indonesian style dishes are available, too. The Singapore and Malaysia inspired Bak Kut Teh hot pot, a set meal specialty, is NT$260. Tender pieces of meat are cooked with Chinese herbs such as Dang Gui, filling the restaurant with the light aroma of herbs. This meal includes two side dishes, a cold drink and Ohya’s specialty pearl rice, cooked in chicken broth.

With so much to offer in the way of food and atmosphere, there’s no better place than Ohya to dine while imagining yourself on a South Pacific island.
