In spite of the economic recession, many employers still plan on holding a Year-End Banquet, or “Welcome the Spring” Banquet, to reward employees who have been working hard throughout the past year. The occasion is not only one of the traditions of Chinese New Year, but also a great way for managers and employers to get better acquainted with their staff in a more social setting. This month, COMPASS introduces several Taichung restaurants well-equipped for holding large banquets.
New Palace
New Palace will be offering banquet specials until March 15. The Chung Te 5th Road branch is this popular chain’s largest with 600 tables. The other two restaurants each hold 300 tables. For groups occupying more than 10 tables, there are two menus priced at NT$5,000 and NT$6,000 per table, respectively. Dishes include Shark’s Fin Soup, Shrimp in Rice Wine, and Huai Shan Chicken. Each table receives six bottles of beer or juice free of charge. For reservations of less than 10 tables, the management will arrange a menu suited to individual tastes and budgets. Worth noting is the fact that New Palace also offers a variety of vegetarian dishes.

Bei Hai An (North Coast) Seafood Restaurant
Bei Hai An offers three set menus for NT$3,000, NT$3,500 and NT$4,000 per table, respectively. All three of them include a lobster dish. There are a variety of other dishes, such as a fish soup, shrimp in bamboo tubes, and dishes made with abalone or grouper. Each table receives unlimited juice refills. For NT$4,000 per table, also receive a free bottle of sake. Generosity at this restaurant seems to have no limit this new year as a bottle of draft beer is priced at only NT$10. These promotions will last until Lantern Festival. Bei Hai An features a banquet hall, private dining rooms and karaoke equipment.

Shi Fen You Wei Restaurant
Located at the intersection of Gung Yi and Mei Tsun roads, Shi Fen You Wei Restaurant has a European-style exterior. However, it is actually a Chinese restaurant serving Beijing and Szechwan cuisine. To expedite the process of ordering food, the restaurant has simplified its menu to two choices–“A” or “B”. For NT$299 and NT$199, respectively, you can eat your fill with these choices. There are more than 100 dishes to choose from, including stir-fry, seafood, meat, stewed and steamed dishes. During the Chinese New Year season, more than 30 Shanghai and other Chinese dishes will be added to the menu. These include Wu Xi Spareribs and Ning Bo Glutinous Rice Cake. Song Sao Fish Soup is a lively mixture of perch, spinach and potato, while “Ang Du Delicacy” is a stew created with top grade ham, streaky pork and bamboo sprouts, and simmered for more than 24 hours. With so many dishes from so many regions of China, Shi Fen You Wei Restaurant guarantees a truly-Chinese Chinese New Year banquet.

Shang He Wu Japanese Restaurant
While most buffet restaurants offer a mix of cuisine, the buffet at Shang He Wu is purely Japanese. The owner, Mr. Chiang, started the chain as a street vendor operator in Taipei city. Now he is the owner of 10 Shang He Wu restaurants. His success lies in the quality of the food served. For one low price, diners can enjoy dishes such as raw oysters, crab, eel and lobster.
Recently, this restaurant has been importing king crabs from Japan to form part of its crab hot pot, with goes great with oolong noodles. There are more than 200 dishes offered each meal time. Sashimi, Japanese beef stew, Kobe roast beef, shark’s fin pot, all sorts of stir fried dishes and seafood barbecue will all ensure you walk away from the table supremely satisfied. They even have Haagen Dazs ice cream. Parking is available in the paid lot across the street. Receive a coupon for one hour of free parking for puchases of NT$500 at this restaurant.
