By contrast with its more general chain bookstore cousins, this independent book shop is closely integrated with local residents’ lives and often involved with non-profit community activities. The books here also often lean towards the non-mainstream market. Since its establishment in 1995, the shop has been quite popular in Taichung and its unique style includes a cafe that allows customers to enjoy a leisurely afternoon reading a selected book with a coffee or tea (priced around NT$100). Although the bookshop used to only sell little-known new books, it now also offers books related to politics and civic movements, suitable for Taiwanese and their lives in this era. It’s no surprise that walking into this place gives one a strong youthful literary and political vibe. –By Jason Chen Translated by Anna Yang
