With a name like 坐坐 (zuo zuo, “sit sit”) Place, this late-night hang-out is bound to be unique, as a visit will confirm. But first you have to find it. Head south on Taichung Road, turn left onto FuXing Road and go up the second lane on the left, where a First Bank branch is located. 坐坐Place is housed in a sizable decades-old commercial building once used by the local Cellina beauty products brand. Colored light and sounds of music waft through vintage windows onto the quiet lane, overlooked by an elevated railway where trains occasionally rumble by and the towering Le Meridien hotel, creating a very atmospheric effect.
The vaguely industrial interior, accommodating over a 100 customers, features a very long bar, sofa areas and other tables, plus a small stage and a couple of big screens. In one corner, there’s a professional Texas Hold’em poker table, which customers can use, together with shelved board games (when there’s no live music).
On Fridays and Saturdays, men pay a NT$500/600 cover charge before/after 11 p.m. and ladies pay NT$400 (or get in free if wearing a “little dress” and high heels) for an all-you-can drink deal on select beers and cocktails, with these prices NT$100 cheaper on Wednesdays. There is also 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. live music and DJs on these nights. Thursdays and Sundays, customers can opt for the above deal or order off the menu (NT$150 beers, NT$150-250 cocktails).
The food menu includes Taiwan “military dependents village” specialties like Mrs. Mi’s Four Season Bean Dumplings (NT$150), plus various braised rice dishes and western items like Sirloin Red Wine Beef Ribs (NT$400), Smoked BBQ Pork Ribs (NT$350), Cheese Beef Rolls (NT$150) and other snacks. By special advance reservation, famous local snacks like Second Market Ting Shan Meat Balls (NT$100) may also be ordered from outside eateries.
An inconspicuous side door also accesses a cavernous inner courtyard area, where there are smoking tables plus a big event area–complete with stage, bar and tables–that can be rented out for special events.
