Taichung’s first real shopping center has opened its doors just behind the railroad station and is quite an imposing presence, with 118,500 square meters of space, 17 levels and about 300 shops, boutiques, cafes and other establishments. The US-designed mall includes large anchor businesses World Gym Fitness Center (open 6 a.m.-11 p.m.) on the ninth floor, a two-floor SEGA Arena/Club Sega amusement arcade (8-9F, open to 2 a.m.) with the latest video games, and a 24-hour Aztec Technology Corporation Internet cafe (8F) being touted as the largest in Asia and second-largest in the world, with 600 terminals and over 1,000 pings of space. Despite all this, the mall is only about 60 percent complete, with 10-theater, 2,800-seat Warner Village cinema complex tentatively scheduled to open in mid-November. A Geant hypermarket should also open about the same time. There is a B1-level food court and parking in the basement levels below that. The best way to get there is to head south on Taichung Road (which runs east of the train station) and turn left onto Fushing Road. (SPECIAL NOTE: Get more details about Taichung Central in COMPASS’ in-depth December cover story on the mall.)
