BIG ROSE BANG

From our archives, Compass Magazine, Apr. 2002:

Over the hill on TaiJungGang (Taichung Harbour) Road (called JungChi Rd. in Shalu) is a hidden gem of a pub. Located directly across from Providence University it is easy to find if you know it is there, but the jewelry in the window and the larger sign ‘Lucy’s’ above Big Rose Bang make it hard to recognise as a pub. Once inside a cozy scene presents itself, with a long bar taking up most of the space and a single table at the back. The creation of Lucy Chen and New Zealander Andrew Marychurch, this pub is rapidly expanding into a large downstairs area – which will feature a stage, pool table (already installed), many tables and live acts in the future. In the meantime, the upstairs area offers a ‘big bang’ combination of free internet access, true western-style toasted sandwiches (NT$80) and inexpensive beer (NT$100) and cocktails (NT$120). Anyone in the Tunghai or Shalu areas who appreciates a comfortable, friendly place to relax and hang out can now indulge without having to make the trek downtown.
