While mention of an “exotic dining experience” may conjure images of a Hawaiian luau, belly dancers or deep-fried insects, in Taichung this might be expanded to include eating while surrounded by line dancers, stepping and clapping in time to some good old American country-and-western music. Such an experience can only be regularly found at one place, Texas Roadhouse, which opened almost 18 months ago in the city.
Back in the USA, where the chain has over 500 branches, local diners may be a bit more used to line dancing by wait staff, but it is the same excellent food–“fall-off-the-bone” ribs, hand-cut USDA Choice steaks, burgers, fresh-made side dishes, complimentary fresh-baked bread, and more–that attracts American and Taiwanese diners alike. The spacious, stand-alone 200-seat Taichung branch includes a variety of seating options and bar, where patrons can order another in-house favorite–“Classic” and “Texas Size” Margaritas (NT$180-360)–plus draft beers and other drinks.
All this is now more attractive than ever, thanks to some brand-new regular offers unique to Taichung (and not found in Taipei). All-day “Wild West Wednesdays” have changed to provide a buy-1-get-1-free deal on All-American Cheeseburgers (NT$420, includes side dish), plus a buy-1-get-1-free deal on draft beers and margaritas. From Feb. 19, another new Taichung weekday value lunch menu features a range of main entrees–steaks, ribs, burgers–plus a side and drink for NT$300-500 range prices. Unchanged from before is the regular, popular weekday happy hour offer on draft beers and select appetizers (see Nightlife “Daily Events & Specials, pg. 10).
As Taiwan welcomes the Year of the Pig, Texas Roadhouse is also ensuring that you have a place to eat by staying open the entire holiday (including new year’s eve). Available now until Feb. 18, Chinese New Year set meals (NT$2,600 2-person, NT$4,800 4-person) include soup, appetizer, Caesar salad, main entree and drinks, making it a nice option for various gatherings.
One final fun Taichung twist is Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m. golf-putting contests in front of the restaurant. Diners get two chances to sink their putt and win a free 20-ounce ribeye steak (getting a free appetizer even if they fail).
